The Canisius High School and Xavier University communities are mourning the heartbreaking loss of Seth Kibler, a talented swimmer, devoted teammate, and cherished friend who passed away on July 15, 2026, at the age of 23 following a courageous battle with cancer. His passing has prompted an outpouring of condolences from family members, classmates, coaches, alumni, and members of the swimming community who are remembering his remarkable accomplishments and the positive influence he had on everyone around him.
Seth Kibler was a proud native of Buffalo, New York, where he built an outstanding reputation as one of the area’s most accomplished high school swimmers during his time at Canisius High School. A dedicated member of the Crusaders’ championship swimming program, Seth combined athletic excellence with humility, determination, and sportsmanship, qualities that earned him the admiration of teammates and coaches alike.
Canisius High School announced his passing with a heartfelt tribute honoring both his athletic achievements and his character. School President Fr. David Ciancimino, S.J., expressed the community’s sorrow while extending prayers to Seth’s family, especially his twin brother, Clayton Kibler.
“We are tremendously saddened to learn of his passing,” the statement read. “We hold Seth, his twin brother Clayton, and all who knew and loved him in our prayers during this difficult time. May Seth rest in the peace and joy of God’s presence.”
Throughout his high school career, Seth distinguished himself as one of the region’s premier swimmers. Alongside his twin brother Clayton, he helped lead Canisius High School to continued success in the pool while earning numerous individual honors. The brothers were recognized as CHS Swimming’s Co-Rookies of the Year in 2017, an award that reflected both their exceptional talent and dedication to the program.
Seth continued to improve each season, competing at the Monsignor Martin Athletic Association All-Catholic Swimming Championships in 2017, 2018, and 2019. His senior season proved especially memorable, as he earned the title of Most Valuable Swimmer in 2019 after an outstanding year of competition.
One of the defining moments of his athletic career came during the 2019 All-Catholic Championships, where Seth captured three championship titles. He won individual gold medals in the 100-yard backstroke and the 100-yard butterfly while also helping secure victory in the 200-yard medley relay by swimming the opening backstroke leg. His performances demonstrated not only remarkable athletic ability but also his commitment to teamwork and excellence.
Following his graduation from Canisius High School in 2020, Seth continued both his academic and athletic journey at Xavier University. There, he competed as a collegiate swimmer while pursuing his education, eventually graduating in 2025. Even as he later faced significant health challenges, those who knew him admired the courage, resilience, and optimism he displayed throughout his battle with cancer.
Friends and teammates remember Seth as someone who inspired others through his determination, kindness, and unwavering positivity. Whether competing in the pool, encouraging fellow athletes, or supporting friends and family, he consistently demonstrated compassion, humility, and perseverance.
